Treatment for Vitiligo

As a dermatologist, I had a lot of experience with patients with vitiligo. Vitiligo disease is defined as a skin condition in which milky white patches appears on the different part of the body due to cell depigmentation. Pigments are the special skin of cells responsible for the coloration of the body.

Types Of Vitiligo


Classification of vitiligo is categorized into two types. They are:

1) Segmental vitiligo
Vitiligo patches limited to a segment of the body, usually in a non-segmental pattern. This form of vitiligo has a younger onset.

2) Non-segmental vitiligo
In this type of vitiligo patches appears in a very symmetrical way. Its size increases gradually. The third class of vitiligo is a combination of above both. Vitiligo is classified into other groups which are subgroups of segmental an non-segmental vitiligo as on it appears on several parts of the body but small in size.

Treatment for Vitiligo


It is done in order to vitiligo treatment. The choice of therapy depends upon the number of patches, the size of patch & on patient’s preference for the treatment.Cures for vitiligo include Surgical Therapy, topical corticosteroids, topical immunomodulators, phototherapy etc.

Sunscreens:
Sunscreens protect the normal skin from burning caused by the sun. It should protect the depigmented cell from the burn and reduce the tanning caused to the normal skin.

Camouflage/Masking:
Use of cosmetics to make the patches less visible to others is another choice used by individuals. Self-tanning lotions and camouflages are available nowadays during the course of treatment of leucoderma.
Surgery: 
There are different types of surgical treatments.
  • Tissue Grafting:- Like Punch grafting, Split skin grafting and Suction blister grafting
  • Camouflage Tattooing:- Permanent camouflage using artificial pigments into the lesions.
  • Cellular Transplantation:- NCES/Melanocyte Transplantation, Cultured Melanocyte Transplantation

Surgical Treatment


If the de-pigmented patch does not increase in size for a period of two years, it is said to be stable. It is the right time to perform vitiligo surgery. Surgical treatment consider for the patients having the following facts,
  • Vitiligo has not changed over a period of one year.
  • A failed medical line of treatment.
  • No New hypopigmented patches should develop
  • All wound should heal with normal pigmentation.

Cost of Vitiligo Treatment
