Vitiligo will GO!

Even in the rapidly changing Indian community, beauty is still defined by the fairer skin tones and spotless skin texture. One condition which is battling its way through the mindset of modern society to be just treated as a medical condition and not attach people suffering from it with social stigma is – VITILIGO. Even though vitiligo is a medical dermatological condition that is both a depigmentation and repigmentation disorder it, however, brings about great psychological stress and embarrassment in patients than any other medical condition.

Vitiligo

In common language, vitiligo is a medical condition where the cells providing color to the skin known as melanocytes get damaged, leading to the formation of white skin patches. Multiple factors are contributing to the development of vitiligo like autoimmune disorders, basic defect of melanocyte cells, genetic inheritance, lifestyle, and stress. But there is still no single clear causative factor linked to the condition.

Even though there are both medical and surgical interventions available to treat the condition, the type of treatment plan provided to patients should be finalized after analyzing the type, stage and extent of vitiligo along with consideration of the patient's age, lifestyle and more importantly, the psychological status towards the condition.

A million-dollar question every patient has before the start of the treatment is, "Can vitiligo be Cured?" According to Dr.Anantha Prasad Holla, an eminent vitiligo specialist and an innovator known for developing many techniques like modified non-cultured epidermal suspension transplantation or NEST, the answer is "NO." But the disease can be TREATED and controlled just like diabetes or hypertension by effective treatment.

According to Dr.Holla who has successfully dealt with many difficult to treat vitiligo problems the chances of controlling vitiligo do not solely rest on the treating surgeon but even depend on the acceptance, the psychological status, lifestyle & diet modification, attitude, stress management and the patience level of the patient who is undergoing the treatment. It's more like a 30: 70 formula. It is easy treating severe vitiligo in a cooperative patient and see fruitful results rather than treating simple vitiligo in challenging patients, which gives no expected outcome.

The majority of the role to control the reoccurrence of vitiligo after a successful surgical or medical intervention should be played only by the patient. To witness the desired outcome, one needs to deal with the disease with great perseverance and strong will power along with psychological balance.
